It works as a digital converter. But it could have some static from time to time. Could be from the interference of the device needing to draw power. The converter needs a power supply, maybe connecting to the wall outlet is better. It doesn't draw enough power from a power bank, so the power bank keeps turning off and won't stay on. There could also be some interference with it. So you'll probably need an empty outlet around where you're going to use it. Sometimes the sound is ok and acceptable. That can cause some issues for anyone needing constant clear sound. The toslink cable that came with it is also crazily tight. It was so hard to pull out which was very annoying. Overall, it works, but it's not of the quality I'm expecting. But it's good enough for the price, for casual use.

I have a very old JVC unit that contains a DVD/CD player, amplifier, and FM/AM tuner all in a single unit. This still works perfectly and I did not see any reason to replace it, except that when our old TV died and we purchased a new Smart TV, we found that the TV only accepted HDMI inputs and more importantly only had eARC and SPDIF digital outputs for audio. We like to use the JVC's amplifier with the TV instead of purchasing an expensive sound bar; but unfortunately the amplifier wanted an analog audio in signal with RCA connectors, and not HDMI and not digital. This inexpensive adapter plugs into your optical (SPDIF) audio output of the TV (or other such device) and converts the signal to analog RCA which can then be sent to an amplifier. It was super easy to hook up, and the needed power is being supplied, in my case, from a spare USB connection on the TV (you could also use a power block that is not included, however the USB power cable is).The only small problem I had, and this is on me not the product, is that I had trouble figuring out how the SPDIF cable connected to the TV. The cable has two little bump outs on the connector which takes a little bit of pressure to seat properly in the TV's output jack. I was initially afraid of breaking the somewhat fragile optical cable; but with a slight bit more pressure the cable popped into the socket.I love that for a very low price, I was able to reuse my old combo amplifier instead of buying all new audio/video gear.
