I purchased one of these cards so that I could run some basic RAID on my home server running Debian 10. The RAID card supports the more advanced RAID configurations, such as RAID 5 as well if that's what you're looking to do. The card I bought was used, since LSI was acquired by Broadcom many years ago and these cards are no longer being made, but they are being sold cheap now which makes it an enticing buy if you're looking for a home / entry-level hardware RAID card. The card worked straight out of the box with multiple 6 TB Seagate IronWolf drives that I installed into my server. Once I initialized the RAID array, I was able to install Debian Linux without loading any additional Kernel modules. Since the card is old, I doubt you'll run into any issues getting the RAIDed drives recognized while installing any modern Linux distribution.Once everything was up and running, I elected to flash the firmware to the latest released version so that any early bugs that might have been found would be fixed. If you're running a simple RAID configuration, you may not need to do this, but I prefer to. Broadcom hosts all of the old software, drivers, and firmware on their website.Note that when you upgrade the firmware, depending on your current firmware version, you may need to upgrade to a few intermediate versions before upgrading to the latest version. I received an error while flashing mine, but when I used one of the intermediate versions it succeeded, allowing me to flash to the latest one after a reboot. One caveat to this card is that it does not come with a battery backup unit and old stock batteries can be pretty expensive (> $100 which was way more than what I paid for the card). Some manufacturers sell compatible batteries that you can purchase for much cheaper (~$30). The BBU is only needed if you want something to keep the card powered on during a power failure so it can preserve its write-cache. If you don't install a BBU by default, then the card will revert to write-through, which has slower performance. You can override this setting, but you'll be putting your data at risk if you encounter a power failure.Another thing you may want to do is position the card in your server chassis such that a fan is blowing cool air directly onto it. It may not be strictly necessary, but I noticed while testing the card out that they heat sink over the main chip that drives the card was a bit hot to the touch. I've heard similar reports from others, but I only own the one card so I don't know how consistent that is across different cards. The additional air flow remedied the issue for me.Overall, I'm really pleased with this card. It does exactly what I need it to and it met all of my expectations.

Great card that I use for my VMware Esxi boxes. I can highly recommend this card for Linux RAID, NAS or VMware installations.

Was mich etliche Stunden an Recherche gekostet hat.
