A friend told me not to buy this and I wish I would have listened. It is very heavy and works well but also easy to rust. I wish I would have gotten a ceramic or glass one. Beautiful to look at

I really like the weight and size of this mortar set. Unlike the granite sets I've used in the past, this one nestles nicely in my palm while I use the pestle to grind spices. It also has rubber feet, if you prefer to set it on the counter, and it stays put surprisingly well. The weight of the cast item head on the pestle means I don't have to apply as much pressure while grinding, too. The shape of the two pieces fits together really well to maximize the grinding that happens with each turn of the pestle, unlike others that require you to chase the spices around the bottom of the bowl.My only concern is the maintenance of the cast iron. The instructions note that you need to make sure it's very dry, and then coat it lightly in neutral oil. I'm accustomed to curing my cast iron pans, but applying the oil to this set without curing it just leaves a slippery residue (even after I wiped it thoroughly several times). I also noticed that water seems to gather in the handle between the wood and the iron, so that's one place rust may start to form pretty quickly. Time will tell how well it holds up.

Not too big, not too small, but still very sturdy. Easy to clean and use.

This mortar and pestle is a large and very heavy stone grinder. The base of it sits on a bamboo support, and the handpiece is quite large. I would consider this a chef grade product, not one commonly found in the average kitchen. The finish on the stone is beautiful, with the weight of it, it should handle any seeds spices, or grain. It actually looks like a piece of art.
