Since a boy (many years ago now) have admired both Regiments of the HC. This is a first-rate 2-disc documentary about the Life Guards, and Blues & Royals' history, ceremonial duties and preparing for active duty in tanks & with war exercises. Most enjoyable & instructive. If anyone wants to know what makes these Regiments tick, or has a hope of signing up one day, this dvd is for you. Impressed.

We purchased this DVD due to a close friend having joined the Blues and Royals Regiment which forms part of the Household Divisiion. The DVD follows the fortunes of an intake from basic training through to full ceremonial duties and the combat role which the Blues and Royals also fulfill. The recruits are a varied bunch - some of whom wear their heart on their sleeve. The ultimate fate of the intake is really interesting and confirms the rigour and dedication needed to become a fully fledged member of the Queen's Cavalry. Despite our particular interest in a close friend's choice of career, this is good "fly on the wall" television which gives you a real insight into one of the oldest regiments in the British Army and how high the standards are to join the ranks of the Queen's Cavalry.

The Queen's Cavalry is a two-disc DVD which features the Life Guards, the most senior regiment in the British Army along side their 'brother'cavalry regiment, the Blues and Royals. These two regiments, along with the Brigade of Guards form theHousehold Division and are the official bodyguard to the reigningMonarch. We are shown something of the training given to the would becavalry men (for some their first introduction to horses) andtheir training at the Riding School at Windsor. We learn a littleof their bonding techniques with their mounts and a lot aboutmucking out and cleaning of kit, such as their highly polished, thigh high jackboots and the breastplate or cuirass. When not busy with ceremonials such as The State Opening ofParliament, Trooping the Colour or providing Sovereign's escortsfor State Visits, we see them training in mock war-zones to honetheir prowess as modern cavalry who drive tanks and other armouredvehicles so as to always be battle ready. The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals were formed into a "Union"of cavalry in 1991, not amalgamated as some think. Each regiment keptit's own unique identity, uniform differences and unique system of ranks. There are no Sergeants, and the junior ranking officers are called Cornets. They are also the only members of the British Army entitled to salute withouthead dress.I should have liked to have seen more time given to the actual cavalryaspect of the Troopers rather than spend time on the military vehiclesaspect of their work, no matter how necessary that is.Tourists may see these young men as just smartly dressed soldiers atHorse Guards in London, but they should be honoured for their sacrificein time of war, many have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, several gavetheir lives in these recent conflicts and untold numbers died in thetwo world wars. They are worthy of our admiration and respect. Two discs with a total running time of 240 minutesComprising all of the original 30 minute broadcastsfrom 2005.Special features include:Unseen footage.Picture Gallery.Regimental History.Worth watching by all who admire our military.
