When I saw the product photos, I initially thought “that doesn’t look much like Paddington”- the film version of Paddington at least, as this is official tie-in merch for Paddington 3. The actual hand puppet that arrived does bear more of a resemblance to the bear (from the first two films, that I’ve seen), but it’s still not quite right somehow. There’s something in the shape of the upper half of the head, and something in the eyes as well, that stops this from really looking like Paddington. Of course, the blue duffelcoat and detachable red hat go a long way to solving that problem.As a hand puppet, it’s nice to use. It’s quite thickly lined, so it works quite well as a Winter glove, but that doesn’t restrict movement too much, and you can still do the key hand puppet gestures easily enough. My hand puppet repertoire doesn’t stretch much beyond nodding, shaking the head, and the grabbing/hugging gesture, but there’s a good amount of movement in it and you can make it be quite expressive.The fact the hat is detachable (for the insertion and removal of marmalade sandwiches) is a nice touch from a story point of view, but I’ve already found that it tends to pop off the head a bit too readily, so as soon as this Paddington has to nod enthusiastically at something, suddenly his hat has fallen off again. A slightly more snug fit of the head on the head would’ve helped.There are some good qualities to the manufacturing of this bear. However, tor the current asking price of twenty-five quid, I’ve got to say I’m just a tiny bit disappointed in the value. And between that, the flyaway hat and not quite getting past the uncanny valley problem of it not *exactly* looking like Paddington, I can’t give this full marks.

“The Puppet Company - Paddington Bear Hand Puppet - Paddington in Peru - Officially licenced movie version of your favourite talking bear - Suitable from 12 months - PC905202”, £24.99.I was surprised to discover my 9 year old has never used a hand puppet before, but he quickly worked it out. Generally this is a really nice, well-made, puppet, and since he has legs he would also work as a teddy, albeit with a slightly floppy body.The hat is a problem though as although it is held on with a small plastic tag on one side, when you nod the puppets head the hat falls off and hangs by this. The only way to get the hat to stay on is to pull it down so it fits snuggly, and then it is so low that it covers his eyes.If you are happy to do some work to sew the hat on I would still recommend this puppet.
