This is the third NAS drive I have owned and by far the best of the bunch. My last drive only lasted 3 years and so I decided to bite the bullet and go for a better more expensive model this time. After reading tons of reviews it the Synology drives seemed to offer the best solutions, offering a great feature set and excellent reviews. The DS115J is their entry level consumer modal with a single disk bay.The first thing to say is that this does not come with a disk, you need to buy a separate disk before you can use it. This is not something to be worried about the installation process is very easy and you do not have to be tech savvy.I purchased the WD Red 2TB NAS 3.5 Inch Hard Disk Drive so the entire solution cost about $200.INSTALLATIONThe installation process is really easy and takes about 30 minutes in total, with most of the time spent installing software.1. Slide open the NAS bay (no screws when you initially receive the drive).2. Slide in the 3.5 inch drive and secure with the 4 provided screws.3. Close the NAS bay and secure with another 2 screws.4. Attach to your network with the provided ethernet cable and connect the power cable.That's all the hardware installation, its takes 5 minutes and anyone could do it.Now comes the software installation:1. Enter the url provided in the install guide in your browser (cannot provide here because its against review guidelines). Your computer must be connected to the same network as your NAS either via a ethernet cable or via wi-fi.2. Once the drive is located on your network it will ask you to install the DiskStation Manager software which is the OS / firmware for the NAS. This process ensures that the latest version of the firmware installed from day 1.3. After it finishes the install it will restart and then ask you to name the server and create the default username along with a password.4. It then asks you to create a Quickconnect ID which will allow you to access your NAS drive from anywhere, even from outside your network.5. It will then ask you if you want to install the recommended packages to get you up and running. A package is like an app, with each one providing a different piece of functionality. For example, 'Download Station is a web-based download application which allows you to download files from the Internet'.6. The DiskStation Manager dashboard is launched and you are taken on a small tour in tutorial mode. This helps new users find the basic functions right away.That's it! You are now ready to rock and roll.I have a windows PC and the easiest way to access the NAS drive is to map the network drive. Just go to file explorer, click on Map Network Drive, select a drive letter, enter the folder (e.g. NAS ) and click ok. From then on you will be able to see and access the drive directly from file explorer.One piece of functionality I was surprised to find on a consumer grade NAS drive is the ability to setup a iSCSi. This works a little like the mapping the network drive above, but can provide faster transfer speeds (depending upon your network setup) and is treated just like an additional disk drive on your PC. This provides the added advantage of being able to run programs directly from the drive.PACKAGESLike I said previously packages are like apps, they provide additional functionality. The installation is a breeze with the software guiding you through the process step by step.The DiskStation Manager software provides an easy to use interface providing great functionality, that can be expanded easily through the use of packages. It also provides help functionality is also extensive and easy to use.

This NAS drive has been a huge asset to my small business. It replaced an ageing tower file server which was slow and had always been unreliable in terms of mapping network drives.We plugged the Synology into our network switch, switched it on and followed the very simple instructions. It was easy to map one of the folders to a drive letter on each of our PCs and files were copied across from the old server quickly and easily.For those of you new to NAS drives (as I was), the DiskStation is basically a little computer with a simple and user-friendly OS which I believe is based on Linux (don't worry, no command line knowledge is necessary, it's all through a pretty point-and-click GUI). The desktop is accessed from another PC on the network via a webpage and has a variety of apps including Cloud Sync which automatically syncs my important folders to Google Drive overnight, and Hyper Backup which automatically backs my files up to a little USB drive I plugged into the back of the Synology. In both cases, the files are encrypted with a password which was important to me as the data was sensitive.Access to the files from the PCs on our network is like greased lightning. The whole thing worked straight out of the box and I am a very satisfied customer.

Zuerst einmal der Grund des Kaufs:Ich war es Leid, immer meine externe Festplatte von Rechner zu Rechner zu tragen. Die dort befindlichen Daten sollten zentral verfügbar sein.Da es eine reine Netzwerkfestplatte nicht gibt (oder ich sie nicht gefunden habe) und sowieso noch eine Festplatte arbeitslos rumlag, habe ich mich für die DS115j entschieden.Schnell geliefert, wie von Amazon gewohnt.Also ausgepackt, Festplatte rein, angeschlossen. Funktionierte ohne Probleme.Das Konfigurationsmenü der DS115j wird über den Browser aufgerufen und dort wird auch gleich der Installationsdialog angezeigt.Positiv überrascht war ich von dem gebotenen Mehrwert: Zahlreiche Pakete für diverse Verwendungszwecke stehen bereits zur direkten Installation bereit; u.a. Datenbank, Audiostation, Videostation, Mediaserver, Cloudstation und vieles mehr. Testweise habe ich die Datenbank inkl phpmyadmin installiert. Auch das verlief problemlos.Allerdings habe ich zwei Punkte, die mir negativ aufgefallen sind:1. kein Wake on Lan: Die DS115j bietet nur die Funktion 'Ruhezustand der Festplatten', d.h. die Festplatte wird in den Ruhezustand versetzt, die DS115j bleibt aber aktiv2. trotz eingestelltem Ruhezustand wacht die DS115j sporadisch und nicht nachvollziehbar aus dem Ruhemodus auf und wird läuft dann für eine gewisse Zeit um dann wieder in den Ruhemodus zu gehen.Zu 1. Abhilfe schafft hier ein kleines Tool: Advanced Power Manager for Synology DS, zu finden unter [...]Hinweis: Im Paketmanager muss in den Einstellungen 'Pakete von allen Herstellern zulassen' aktiviert werdenZu 2. Die Sache mit dem Ruhezustand KÖNNTE an zwei Sachen liegen: Updates oder Prozesse, die noch laufen und die DS115j bzw. die Festplatten dadurch aus dem Ruhemodus holen oder aber es liegt an der verbauten Festplatte die wahrscheinlich nicht auf der Kompatibilitätsliste für die DS115j stehtFazit: für meine oben genannten Zwecke mit dem Advanced Power Manager völlig ausreichendWer allerdings Wert auf Datensicherheit legt sollte zu einem Gerät mit mehr Festplatten greifen und ein RAID konfigurieren.Auch vermute ich dass bei ausgeprägter Nutzung der verfügbaren Pakete ie DS115j auf Grund des Arbeitsspeichers und des verwendeten Prozessors schnell an ihre Grenzen kommt

Vor ein paar Jahren kaufte ich mir die Synology USB Station 2. Ihren Dienst verrichtete das kleine NAS nicht allzulange da die Möglichkeiten begrenzt waren und nach DMS 3.2 kein Update mehr rausgekommen ist.Nun suchte ich ein NAS auf welches die Daten Zuhause, Zentral für alle Familienmitglieder, einsehbar waren. Außerdem sollten auf zwei externe Platten zwei verschiedene Sicherungen möglich sein. Die Wahl fiel zuerst auf eine "WD My Cloud". Mit dieser war ich aber nich im geringsten zufrieden (Siehe Rezssion WD My Cloud 3TB).Dann wurde die DS115j bestellt und wie immer bei Amazon, schnell geliefert. Auf der DS115j ist ja die aktuellste Firmware von Synology oben und bietet außer RAID usw (bedingt durch nur eine Festplatte), alle Möglichkeiten die die "großen" Geschwister auch bieten.Und jetzt war ich wirklich mehr wie überrascht. Die Möglichkeiten die einem hier geboten werden, sind wirklich überragend.Es gibt so viele Einstellmöglichkeiten das diese hier den Rahmen sprengen würden.Die zusätzlichen Appplikationen die man installieren kann (sehr einfach per Klick), sind teilweise, je nach Anwendungsfall, auch sehr nützlich.Da wäre die Photo Station, die meine Frau nun für die Verwaltung der Familienfotos verwendet. Und das alles im Browser, unabhängig vom verwendeten Betriebsystem. Die Photo Station integriert auch problemlos bereits vorhandene Ordnerstrukturen. Das ist besonders löblich da man nach Jahren eine Struktur aufgebaut hat die man einfach kennt und nicht mehr missen möchte.Die Note Station. Bisher verwendete ich einen Outliner mit dem Informationen gesichert wurden. Nach der Anschaffung eines OSX Gerätes suchte ich lange vergeblich nach einem kompatiblen Produkt welches auf Win, Linux uns OSX lief. Die gefundenen Produkte waren entweder schlecht programmiert oder einfach nutzlos. Es bot sich natürlich eine Cloud im Internet an. Das war aber das letzte was ich machen wollte. Nun aber, verwalte ich diese Notizen und Informationen alle mit der DS115j. Zugriff von allen Rechnern auf die Note Station über den Browser funktioniert problemlos. Die Oberfläche der Notestation schaut auch sehr schön aus und kann alles was ich brauche.DSM 5.2 steht bereits in den Startlöchern (Beta kann bereits runtergeladen werden), welche einige nützliche Zusatzfunktionen bringt. Versionierung des Standarbackups oder Erweiterungen der Note Staion usw. Hier wird also immer weiterentwickelt was sehr löblich ist.Generell muss zur Oberfläche der DSM gesagt werden das diese sehr übersichtlich aufgebaut ist und stabil läuft. Sie ist auch noch flott selbst wenn die DS 115j am Arbeiten ist. Die Stabilität ist bezeichnend für Synology. Man muss das NAS nicht alle 3 Tage booten damit es wieder problemlos läuft. Die DS 115j läuft und läuft und läuft.Noch etwas zu Hardware. Es wird manchmal bemängelt das nur ein 800 Mhz Prozessor und 256 MB RAM verbaut sind. Wichtig aber ist, wie die Performance des NAS ist und nicht was für Zahlen drauf stehen. Und hier mekt man einfach das die Software sauber programmiert wurde.Man kann ruhig sagen das dieses NAS für private Haushalte anstandslos zu empfehlen ist.

Llevaba tiempo buscando un Disco Duro portátil para guardar todos mis documentos, fotos, vídeos y música. Al final después de tanto buscar decidí que seria mas cómodo comprar un NAS, de esta forma podría acceder a mis datos desde cualquier parte de mi casa, e incluso desde fuera de mi casa.Un compañero de trabajo me recomendó que comprase cualquier NAS de la marca Synology, así que después de mucho comprobar modelos me decante por este, y ha sido una muy buena elección, incluye su propio Sistema Operativo, el cual te permite realizar una buena gestión del NAS, crear grupos de usuarios y usuarios, darles permisos, decidiendo a que y a que no pueden acceder, configurar tu propia Nube (DiskCloud), incluso alojar una web, aparte de más cosas, configurar y programar descargas de archivos, por torrent o descarga directa, corro electrónico, creación de documentos, etc.Desde mi PC, Teléfono Movil, Tablet, XBOX 360 y Raspberry PI accedo (subir, descargar, y modificar archivos, aparte de acceder al sistema Operativo) de forma fácil a mis vídeos, música y fotos.El Streaming de vídeo desde fuera de casa hacia el NAS es espectacular, reproduce vídeos en Formato Alta Definición sin ningún problema (incluso con varias personas viendo el mismo o distintos vídeos), claro que esto también depende de la conexión a internet que uno tenga, en mi caso yo tengo la Banda Ancha de ONO de 60 MB y todo va genial.Si deseas compartir cosas con tus amigos y viceversa, puedes crearte una nube de forma fácil y rápida. Funciona igual o mejor que DropBox. En mi caso, tenia la duda de si un NAS iba a ser lo más seguro, en el sentido de tener intimidad y tener bien guardados mis datos, efectivamente no hay problema, puedes encriptar los archivos y protegerlos con contraseña, así como limitar el acceso a estos desde el exterior.Y más sorpresas. No dudéis a la hora de comprarlo, puede que sea 10 o 20 € más caro que otras marcas, pero sin duda merece la pena.Os recomiendo que de disco duro, busquéis uno que sea especial para NAS, cualquiera vale, pero para un NAS, mejor que sea optimizado para usar en NAS.Es un producto excepcional y sin duda os dejara buen sabor de Boca.
