This review covers the RPLIDAR A1 device only.Once set up the lidar measures its surroundings fine and return precise layout as seen by field of view. So it should works fine for simple DIY electronic projects.The turning motion of the laser is a little more noisy than I would have liked, but some of the noise it may be reduced when properly mounted in a device that absorbs vibration a little better than my desk.The quickstart guide provided does not really apply to this product. The guide recommend you download Robostudio which seems like a decent piece of software (it's free), but it cannot connect to this model (at least on on my computer). Instead you need to download a frame_grabber software that allow you to monitor traffic serial communication directly off the com port you are using.The product is fairly well documented on their Slamtecs website and contain an sdk if you like coding in C/C++.
