This water meter is better than a lot of others in my view because it takes two AAA batteries and not a button cell. The battery compartment is sealed with an O ringing the back pulls off (eventually) so no screws to mess around with. The backlit display turns on when the large green button is pressed and stays on for a few seconds, pressing and holding the button switches between litres and gallon units and also puts the meter into pairing mode for Bluetooth connection. First you download the Smart Living App and select add device, you also need to press the green button on the meter until the display says UNCON when the App connects the meter will display the current time and the device will appear within the App. The functionality is very limited as can be seen from the screen shots, that is it, but it does save having to bend down to read the meter. I am going to have to re think my installation on my outside tap because with the meter connected and a water timer the outlets are a few inches off the ground which is not very practical, I am concerned about the plastic body of the meter taking any strain as I don't want to break it.

One of the issues I have is that my boats 200L water tank has no level meter, however, I have arranged a tube between the bottom outlet and the top inlet. This allows the level to be seen but as the tank is of an unknown shape the level needs to be calibrated. Using this meter and the app I was able to mark off different levels based on quantity of water added to the tank as it was being filled from a hose. The meter read about 200L when the tank overflowed which gave me confidence in the calibration. This saved a lot of time compared with filling the tank manually from a measuring jug/container. I am planning to experiment with the meter inline with the water pump so I can get a measure of water used. It is likely that the location will mean that I will not be able to see the meter and will need to use the app. The meter does go to sleep when not in use and the app looses connection so I will only be able to read the amount used just after using some water.

My wife gets very grumpy about the cost of ‘wasting’ water. I on the other hand enjoy growing vegetables and see irrigation as a necessity. With this device I am able to demonstrate that I am indeed not spending ‘hundreds of pounds’ on water and indeed, the cost of irrigation is pretty modest (about £2 a week). So the price alone is worth the marital harmony! As a device it is simple to set up and the app easy to navigate. Build quality looks good and I think this is an excellent value item (and much cheaper than divorce! :) )

Want to know how much it's costing to water the garden? This is for you. Requires AAA batteries, which go in a compartment which is quite hard to open, but once you've sorted that out, it works just great!
