A little fiddly using the right amount and quality of sealing tape - heavy duty is best. Up and running non-stop twice a day for over two years now with no issue. I suggest creating a little shade cover if a sunny spot as I have done. I use ultimate lithium Energizers as they have a wide OK temp range and last at least 3 months - time span chosen when I replace for safety.

the problem, I encountered, was leaking of water - not much, but dripping....Because of fear, that this would become worse, I decided to return it.

About half of the 20 or so water timers I received either didn't work properly straight away or went faulty within a few months. I returned 10 off timers months ago and the company have not replaced them or refunded for the faulty items. They even ignore my emails asking when they are going to resolve the problem.

My wife asked me to refit the water timer to the greenhouse trickle watering system as we were going on holiday in a few days time. True to form it failed to work. By my reckoning this was the third timer to fail in a similar number of years and I was wondering if they all had a 'warranty expired' clock built in, or is that a bit too cynical? With little time to spare it was an obvious choice to search Amazon for a replacement timer that could be delivered and installed before we departed.I discounted units from H...k as they had proved unreliable and any looking like the E...o unit brought back from a trip abroad were also off the list. The Orbit 96781 Timer looked like it met our needs and the description gave the impression that it had been well designed. It is a little more expensive than some others but had some features that I rather liked. Amazon Prime delivered the unit in time for it to be installed and to run a short test.Right from unpacking I was pleased with the Orbit timer. As a retired electronics engineer with a lot of software experience I decided it looked and behaved like a product I would have been pleased to have developed myself.- It is substantially made and gives the impression it should survive for more than the 12 to 18 months achieved by their competitors. (Yes, I did take them indoors over the frost period!)- The brass insert in the tap connector ensures it connects to the tap with none of the 'is it tight enough and have I cross threaded it?' worries experienced with some all plastic screw-on units.- No leaks, no drips; not even one!- The setup times are programmed using a clear and easily understood custom LCD display, you are not left in the dark about the settings.- The display continually toggles between showing the time and the interval to the next watering; so no worrying about having correctly set the watering cycle or wondering if an offset delay time has been set properly.- The time-of-day clock actually keeps accurate time.- You can log onto YouTube to find a tutorial for setting the unit up. Search for 'youtube orbit 96781'Later: Back from holiday.... the tomatoes and other crops are thriving, the clock shows the correct time and the Orbit 96781 'Buddy HF' Single-Port Digital Tap Timer has earned the dubious accolade of provoking me to write my first Amazon review, while earning itself a full five stars.November 2019: Still working well. Cleaned out the greenhouse and disconnected the Orbit timer. Removed the batteries (always a good thing to do) and put unit in warm cupboard for a week to be sure it was properly dried out. Stored away in a polythene zip bag until next spring; lets see if it comes back to life; unlike some competitors.May 2020: Unpacked from its poly bag, fitted two new batteries, set the clock and a preliminary set of start times... all without reference to the instructions as it is so easy to do without them. Connected to the tap and trickle watering pipe and turned on the water; not a drop leaked out. Used the manual off/on to check the valve is OK and that was fine. Did a 10 minute test and that was fine. Later today I'm confident it will do a 15 minute watering cycle 'cos the display is counting down to it.Simply by working the second year the Orbit timer has outperformed timers that found their way into the scrap bin... and I'm looking forward to a really boring 2020 performance from the Orbit... it just gets on with the job it was designed to do... no excitement from worrying if the tomatoes are going to be shrivelled up when we get home!
