Batteries will only give you half a charger, so definitely needs plug in to charge fully. I don’t know if the solar works cause I only cared about being battery powered. Lights, siren, radio works good.

At first this was a beautiful radio, but some usability problems made it a bad choice.Medium wave (AM Band) sounds great. The speaker volume, audio quality for conversation sounds really good.FM channels sound excellent.Strong Lithium ION 21700 cell rechargeable battery that can provide good amount of charge to a smart phone in case of emergency.I tested power consumption while radio on FM at medium volume and it uses less than 70mAh. The included battery should be able power the radio for more than 50 hours.I wish the radio could be charged using USB Type-C connector. Most chargers today are Type-C, micro USB is outdated.Like others have commented there seems to be a problem with the tuner for the Weather Band. Every couple minutes the volume fluctuates or audio distorts while listening to the weather band channels. This is not due to broadcast or antenna as I have connected longer antenna and tested at different locations. There's a problem with the tuner in the radio on the weather band. The Shortwave is totally useless. Shortwave band tuner should not be included on a radio at this low cost. You will have to connect an external wire antenna and scanning through the SW band will take forever. SW band is useless for me without direct input keys. The biggest annoyance and usability problem comes from the way buttons are laid out and how you turn on the radio. When you turn the radio on, it doesn't start at the last channel before you turned off, but it goes into a WX standby mode, then you have to press the band button to select AM, FM, SW, or Weather channel. So every time you turn the radio ON, you have to press the BAND button to select a band to listen to the radio. It's annoying. There's no way to set preset channels. You may have to keep pushing the tune up or down button dozens of times to switch between your favorite channels. That becomes annoying. The buttons are recessed, and they're right next to each other. It's hard to see or feel them in the dark. The night light or flash light does not illuminate front face of the radio or the buttons.A digital tuning knob, and preset channels would have been wonderful instead of having a useless SW band.

I picked this up to keep in my backpack just in case. I already have an earlier analog style of the same radio that I really enjoy, so I wanted to check out the “new improved” version.I won’t go into detail on all the features, just the standouts and what I feel is lacking.First- the lights are outstanding! The flashlight competes with any I’ve had camping while the reading light illuminates an entire room. Thankfully both lights have a dim setting as well as crazy bright. This is a welcome upgrade from some emergency radios that feature sad little lights you couldn’t use to change a tire, much less see your way through a dark house or woods. The digital display allows you to tune directory onto a station although sadly, the tiny antenna fails to pull in some local fm stations that any mediocre radio should get.On to sound quality- it seems that the “upgrade” to this radio included a smaller speaker as this sounds much tinnier than my earlier analog radio manufactured by the same company. This unit does include an earphone plug and the sound is lovely through headphones. I value the upgrade mainly for the large capacity rechargeable battery and the backlit digital display as well as the weather alert feature. While not perfect, this radio has the features I need and is a good addition to my emergency kit, on that basis I recommend it.
