I think this book explains and shows a lot for those like me that are still learning. How to determine what fabric you have, how to treat it before sewing, with washing, and of course how to sew. I do not have nor want a machine, and for me it is loaded with great tips and lessons. Someone is saying there is nothing about darning, well, in mine there is a whole chapter about it. And Bernadette is giving space in her book to teach some other lessons, that some people seem to have a real issue with. Take it as some added pages, that try to open a closed mind, and bring more understanding for people that may not be like you. You don't have to read them. You don't have to agree to all, and you don't have to be like her. It is her book, and she can bring what ever she wants in it to people. If you are a hater of all that is different from what you think is right, this book may not be for you, but if you are a lover, it sure is! I do recommend it, for sure for the beginner, or the lover of historical ways of sewing.

I like to sew and mend clothes by hand, either for real people or for miniature dolls, and this book is a treasure trove of old techniques and tricks. I‘ve been following the author‘s youtube channel for quite some time, admiring her beautiful work, and I do feel she put much of her knowledge into this book. She also took a lot of care with the very good and clear illustrations and the overall structuring of the book. It‘s very helpful, plus a pleasure to look at.

Easy to follow, instructive, witty - what else do you need? The pictures are STUNNING and the layout is so beautiful 😍❤️. Just wish it came in a librarian's collector's edition hard cover in quasi victorian style. Would snap that up SO fast and bequeathe it to my nieces when I die it's so great.

The book is well written and even highly understandable, even if English isn't your native language. I can fully recommend the book, if you need some advise or ideas how to take care of your garments or make some yourself.

Nowadays handsewing instructions are mostly aiming at decorative stitching. But how did people make garments that lasted for years witout sewing machines? Bernadette Banner knows the sources and transports the old knowledge in a way that's easy to follow and beautifully illustrated!I also found the section on how to find out what kind of fibers are in a fabric very helpful!

Everyone who is familiar with Bernadette Banner's content knows what to expect from this book and won't be disappointed but rather thrilled and delighted with this, everyone who isn't let me explain (or rather swoon)This book contains a full introduction to both basic handsewing, mending and repairing clothes as well as altering techniques and more complex or historical stitches and variations not as common in modern sewing instructions. All instructions come with well-lit, high-quality photographs, the layout and descriptions are both easy to follow and aesthetically pleasing and fits right into the feel of her YouTube videos, relaxing, thoughtful and joy-inducing.I personally love the fact that she gives food for thoughts regarding topics like sustainability and eco-friendly alternatives to fast fashion while never coming across as pushy, judgemental or agressive, but passionate and positive and always offering better options and new perspectives. All that being said, a perfect book not only for fangirls like me, but also for beginners and advanced seamstresses and everyone interested in (historical) handsewing and learning and perfecting their techniques. I'm truly happy to own a piece of her expertise and wisdom and feel a sense of second-hand pride for her.

I admit that as a long time subscriber to the author's youtube channel I might be ever so slightly biased in my opinion. This book contains detailed descriptions of all basic handsewing techniques one needs as a beginner as well as some advanced techniques. It's not written too opulent making it easy to read but still containing all it takes to understand the methods.I especially enjoyed the short essays of different authors in between chapters as well as the explanation of sewing during the Victorian/Edwardian time.

I read it once-through the moment I got my hands on it and it was like watching a newly-uploaded, extra-long video. The pictures are lovely though not as detailed as the video medium we're all used to, the authorial voice is very distinctive even in writing, and overall it's a very nice book to have around. It might not be the best reference for a total beginner to start their sewing journey with, but I think it works great for somebody who has been interested in sewing for a while, watched some tutorials and want to learn more about historical/sustainable methods. The book is also great for near-beginners who want to fill in gaps in their knowledge or for the more experienced, as a refresher.I like the few "Features" pages. There are so many other how-to-sew manuals; I assumed that a reader of this niche/alternative/nerdy book, being similarly nerdy, would appreciate others sharing their diverse journeys in fashion. Think of them as the "grandma made this dish when I was a kid, now it takes me back to my childhood on the farm" story before a recipe - completely skippable, but adds a touch of humanity.
