This is one of my favorite spikes, the size, weight, and feel in the hand speak volumes to me about quality of material and attention to detail. This tool is one that I use oftten for my paracord projects.

The actual stainless version is great. Be sure to order that one - read and choose carefully. (I have other similar tools made of aluminum - they are lighter, but also easier to bend - not suitable for my needs, too light duty). The lacing needles are also great - they have a good / useful taper, not too blunt but not too sharp. They also have a fairly deep recess for the cord (unlike the cheaper ones, that are so shallow that they won't hold the cord - you can't screw the cord far enough into the recess). I had purchased a 'starter set' earlier for less than half of the price of this set, and that set came with more tools. But they were inexpensive (as you'd expect) and almost none have remained in my tool kit. The tools in this set will be in my tool kit for years to come - very well worth the extra $.

I'm giving this a one star not because it's a bad tool, but it seems incomplete. It comes with three ancillary pins. But there is no way to attach them to to tool handle. The pins are threaded, but from what I've seen they only attach to an extension which is not offered. The pins with more pins and the extension(s) are sold separately elsewhere. Knowing what I know now I would look elsewhere for the tool and then obtain the pins later if I really needed them. As I said the pins are threaded, but he diameter does not make them useful for attaching cordage for sewing or braiding. Mosquito forceps still work best in small and medium projects, I've used a shackle wrench occasionally in larger efforts. This type of wrench is often found (or part of the blade design on rigger's knives along with a useful marlinespike. Some have mentioned the tip of this tool. It is rounded; that is to make it easier to slip between the fibers without breaking threads. Some spikes I've encountered are flat tipped, which often cuts threads due to the sharp edge.Although I gave a one star I am not disappointed; it works well in most efforts. It is aluminum there are stainless fids, marlinespikes and pin needles out there, but most often I am on the look out for a hard brass, I would like to find one forged in bronze metal (a better alloy than brass).

I've been thinking of getting one of these for a while, and finally decided to do it after seeing a friend using theirs. I love the longer point (sharper than most but still not too sharp), and the stainless steel version definitely has some heft to it which I definitely like. I don't know that I'll keep the fids stored inside as they tend to rattle around, but that's a very minor thing. The workmanship on this product is outstanding, and i will go to this brand in the future for any additional tools.
