Every single thing I put these on supposedly had lead in it…including the stainless steel dog dish. DO NOT recommend or you’ll toss out everything you own. And yes, I followed the instructions exactly.

Works perfect! Tested on keys first and it immediately detected lead, (these swabs come already looking an orange-mustard yellow, but don't worry, when there is lead, there is a noticeable change in color) I Used the other side of the swab on my new metal cup and there was no change. Lead Free!

These work very well. My main concern was whether they would provide a clear indication of the presence of lead, and they do. The swabs are orange in colour, so I wondered if the pink to red colour change would be clearly noticeable. As you can see from the photos, it is.I tested a lead axe from a trophy. It's hard for me to understand why someone would use lead for this purpose, but it was a very heavy, dull, grey metal that was soft and easily scratched or indented, so I had little doubt on visual inspection that it was lead. It was coated or plated with something that looked like gold (but certainly wasn't) that had come off in various places. The swabs gave an extremely clear indication that it was, indeed, lead. In the second photo, I have turned the swab so you can see the difference between the place where the swab contacted the metal and the natural colour of the swab.In the next photo, I have tested what appears to be a silver plated bell. The swab removes the tarnish a little, which results in a dark residue on the swab, but it is clear that this is a negative test. Sometimes things that look silvery can be pewter, which may contain lead, so this seemed like a good reason to test this bell.Next, I tested some lead solder with the same swab that I used for the bell. I knew for sure that this contained lead, and indeed, the swab indicated that clearly. You can see the red marks on the swab where I ran it over the solder twice.I also swabbed some lead crystal. It turned out negative, even though it has a high percentage of lead, because the glass does not normally allow the lead to escape. I did not try leaching out the lead with an alcoholic or citrus beverage.Lead is still commonplace in our homes, so it makes sense to test things that we or our children may be exposed to. These test strips are easy to use and very effective.

After hearing how the super popular tumbler company has had their products test positive for lead, I was a little worried about the off brand tumblers me & my family have been using, so I decided to get these. They are ridiculously easy to use and work really well. You literally just dip it into water for 2 seconds and then swab the item. Give it a bit to develop and then compare the color of the swab to the bottle. The active ingredient is Sodium rhodizonate, which is the stuff used by the police to test for GSR.My husband actually casts lead so I had a solid lead ingot available to be my first test item, and unsurprisingly, it turned red. Thankfully all our tumblers were negative (and I even "double check" the swab was working by swiping it across the ingot afterwards. Lol)We also tested all our cast iron and we're pleasently surprised to find all the food ones were negative. One had a tiny amount of reaction, but it's one we used for decorative purposes, so not a big deal.Overall, I'm utterly thrilled with these. The photo has the lead ingot on the left, the decorative miji cast iron pan in center and the swab from my kiddos tumbler on the right, resting on the tumbler lid.
