The first thing you notice about this is just how big and chunky the floating part is. It feels like it's made from some heavy duty plastic, and it kind of needs to be, spending most of it's life in water.It's very well sealed and I found it took quite a bit of force to open it. Inside there's a battery compartment fo 2 x AAA batteries - although none of the batteries required for this or the display are included unfortunately.Once the batteries are in, it's just a case of resealing it, putting it in the water and leaving it.In my tests, it works very well, with decent range and accurate temperature readings. I think the biggest test for this will be a long term one, as water seals always degrade over time. But if I can get a decent life out of this, then I'll be very happy.Overall, I think it's pretty good value for money, it's very easy to use and it works well. I'd rather it came with batteries, but that's something to keep in mind if you do buy it.

Seems good quality and updates every 40 seconds.Ordered as a reviewer for our fixed swimming pool that is attached to the side of our garage.Now under basic testing this does seem to work and works fairly well over a distance through a solid wall and then in to our office where the unit will be mounted.I went with the float with the smaller screen and can say that unless at a specific angle it is not easy to read so have a low quality LCD in it but is still readable.The display is nice and big and very easy to read form most angles, it is large fonted to can be read at a distance.Just so all are aware, these do not like rechargeable batteries at all, i only managed to get them working by using a set of high capacity lithium ones as we do not use single use batteries. this also reports standard rechargeable batteries as near flat with the low battery icon, this is due to them only being 1.2v each rather than 1.5v, i wish manufacturers would account for this in their products, so if looking at rechargeable lithium are your best bet.from testing i have done these seem to refresh the temperature every 40 seconds or so.FOr me this is a nice to have as an addition to our pool so we know when it is warm enough for the kids to jump in, a 5 star product at this price point.
