If you don't know what a geocache is, I highly recommend googling the term. There is a whole world of hidden treasures right outside your doorstep. It's a great way to spend some fun quality time with kids of all ages, great ice breaker for a first date, fantastic way to see beautiful areas you never thought to visit. And if you want to get nerdy about it, the science that it uses is pretty cool too...but you don't have to understand any of it to enjoy the hunt.The pinecone has a good weight to it so it won't be picked up by animals or blown around in the wind. The bottom is flat so rolling won't be an issue. There is a small canister that fits perfectly inside and comes with a log scroll. The pinecone itself isn't water proof and I don't think the inside of the cannister would remain dry if fully submerged in water, but between the cover on the bottom and the cannister, your log should stay nice and dry. If you look at the pinecone, it's identifiable as being made of non-natural material to make it a bit easier to find. But at a glance it looks like a pinecone and muggles shouldn't give it a second thought. We are planning on putting it in a bush that our dog continually manages to find random lost balls in. He's convinced the bush is magic so seems worthy of a geocache. :)
