Kurzbeschreibung

New York based Carlton was not around for long, yet it contributed much to the rich tapestry of American music, dabbling in country, the emerging force of rockabilly and the in-vogue doowop genre, giving a few future stars their big break. With a heady mixture of forgotten artists, big names-to-be and unknown gems, this three-disc collection gives a snapshot of how Carlton helped shape American music.

Sit back, relax and take a view of music that inspired a generation in the 50s and 60s.

Carlton, which operated between 1957 and 1962, was a label with no clearcut identity, similiar to Jamie, Amy, etc., so listening to this cd straight through is like listening to AM radio from the period with no DJ patter — some goodies, much pleasant but instantly forgettable material, and a few things you wish you'd never heard (The NuTornados' Philadelphia USA sounds like pre-war glee club). The cream here are Dwight Pullen (Sunglasses After Dark & Teenage Bug), Jesse Lee Turner (Please Don't Tease & Move Baby Move) and the three Jack Scotts (Goodbye Baby, Leroy & Geraldine). All Scott's Carlton records are great (both sides) so if you don't already have them I would search out a cd with those before you bother with this. There is other nice stuff — the Chantels, Big Al Downing, Tommy Fredericks' great ballad (Prince Of Players), Gary Stites & 2 very early Kenny Rogers (That Crazy Feeling & Got A Lot To Learn), but there's a surplus of listenable but uninspired pop and none of the nice obscure doo-wop and girl group items that cropped up in the Guyden, Warwick or Amy sets. If you love pop from the period you will find this set worthwhile, but if you expect anything of the quality of Roy Orbison, Del Shannon or Brenda Lee you'll be disappointed.

Très bon produit à un très bon prix. Je recommande ce produit à tous les bons collectionneurs de musiques souvenirs.

I bought this release because I knew a performer who appears on this title. Carlton records had a variety of music, some oddly strange, some genuine hits, and mostly stuff that never made it into Billboards top 100. Another great compilation of obscure and eclectic music you've never heard of or simply forgot about. Nice job, One Day Music!

Most fans of 50s & 60s music will be aware of Jack Scott, The Chantels, Big Al Downing etc., but as is usual with these compilations, so many rarities appear here. I had no idea Kenny Rogers made records like the ones on these CDs, so once again listening to these has been a small voyage of discovery. Well worth the money.
