This DSTE Battery Grip has impressed me with it's build quality and functionality here's why:* I was looking mainly at the extra battery shooting time and this unit gives you two options, using two Nikon EN-EL14's or using six AA Batteries ( I haven't used this option yet but will use it as a backup if needed ) so that's that box ticked* The OFF-ON button on the back of the unit is for switching the shutter release button off and on which is a nice option just incase you accidentally press it when not needed* The Signal Transferring Cable plugs into the front of the unit (not the side like other brands that I have been researching) and into the GPS socket on the side of the D5100, it's better to me that it comes round to the front than the side as it's better for holding it in landscape shooting* The connecting screw pull round wheel does have a bit of play on it once the camera has been fully attached to the unit, but it's not that noticeable* The IR is another nice extra* The way the rubber grip goes around the unit is a nice piece of thoughtful design, when the cameras in the normal landscape position it helps to stop it sliding around on polished/glass/glossy surfaces. I have seen other brand units that only have a small amount of rubber grip and the base surface on them is just hard plastic* The camera fit to the unit is good but there are two areas around the edges where it doesn't quite meet the body, looking at the camera: at the rear on the righthand side and the front righthand side there seems to be a slightly bigger gap, but it's really not that bad and not forgetting this is for the D5100 and D5200 and I'm not sure what the D5200 body differences are. The surfaces that meet when screwed down between the D5100 and the unit are perfect.* The unit's speckled effect to match the Nikon speckle is similar but a little larger than the Nikons, but I'd have to say that's really nit-picking it looks great* The shutter button has a nice feel to it, you can feel the two stages of the trigger very well* The unit comes with clear instructions. All in all I have looked at reviews upon reviews on a lot of these battery grips and for £31 the DSTE Pro Multi Power Grip is great for the price, hope this helps.

At first, I didn't care for how much wider the base was compared to the previous battery grip that I used to have (one I got from Best Buy that failed on me at my first wedding with it) but it grew on me and now I really like it. It's wider because it holds six AA batteries in the one holder. When I'd hold my Nikon D5100 in landscape mode, the wide base would make my pinky finger somewhat uncomfortable given that I had to place that finger underneath the base which kinda stretched my pinky a little but I got used to it.It has a nice rubber-like grip that's easy to hold onto, it secures nicely to the camera body, the side portrait button is real nice to have. When I put six rechargeable AA batteries in the one holder, it works like a charm, that was my biggest concern before I bought it but asked about it and got an answer that it'd work and then bought it. It came with a remote control that I don't use since I don't need it. My D5100 is, as I'm sure all you D5100 owners know, is remote-capable and I have a remote for it and use it instead. However, just for kicks, and to test it out, I did try out the remote that came with this and it works great. I tested it on every shutter release mode and surprisingly, it worked on all of them, even the timed ones. So, it could essentially be a replacement for the ML-L3 remote control designed for the D5100. But, problem is, this battery grip only has a remote sensor on the front side and none on the back so if it's on a tripod and you're behind the camera, you'll have to carefully reach around the front with the remote to aim it at the sensor without getting your hand in the picture you're trying to take. An alternate method to avoid the hand in the shot is to set it up on at least a 2 second timer to get your hand out of the way in time. And since I take a lot of 1080p video with this Nikon, the fact that I can switch to the holder with the six AA's in it really makes me happy since I can have a considerably longer run time when taking video. I only have two EN-EL14 batteries and if I wanted to, I could put them both in the one holder but then when I ran them down, I would have another to fall back on so I use one EN-EL14 battery at a time for taking pics and when I switch to doing mostly video, I change out to the other holder with the AA's. The weight increase is a bit much but it's worth it for the difference in run time.I haven't used this one at a wedding yet but have at Longwood Gardens (in Kennett Square, PA, USA) plus elsewhere and I've taken a thousand or so photos already and it just keeps on ticking. Oh yeah, I do a lot of panoramics and with the portrait button on the side, I can easily take a series of overlapping portrait-like shots then on my computer, stitch them together (using Microsoft ICE) and create some real nice panoramic pics that have more vertical height to them versus taking the usual landscape panoramics. I just love the side button for that reason there.I know I rambled on a bit here but I hope my rambling helps someone down the road to decide on buying this one. I've had mine for a little more than a month and I'm quite pleased with it. The price is more than reasonable. In fact, it cost less that the one I got from Best Buy and it's better quality, has the other holder for the AA's, and a remote to top it off.If this thing ever fails me, I will promptly edit this review to advise you all on its' demise. Until then, I'm gonna keep on enjoying my new battery grip! And call me crazy, but having this thing on my camera makes me look more like a professional photographer, which I'm not (just an advanced amateur), but don't tell anyone that, okay? ;)Now, on a side note, even though this thing is not fragile like china or whatever, you'd think they would've packaged this with some sort of bubble wrap or anything to keep it from flopping around in the box it came in but they didn't. Luckily, it wasn't damaged in the shipping process. If it had been, I would've been right on that phone with amazon about it. I took a picture of it when I first opened the box to show the lack of bubble wrap.Attached to this review are pics of this battery grip on my D5100. I took them with my Nikon L105 without a flash.UPDATE 9/29/20: Just noting that this still works fine. I haven't used my Nikon D5100 all that much over the past few years but this thing hasn't been an issue at all for when I have used it.
