though the product is beautifully made is is not designed for Japanese knives. its best for western knives.

See the first pic, the one that came with a knife set has seen better days, srsly.I wasn't all that excited about getting another one, I mean it's a knife block.Until I saw this one. First off, this is a really nice looking knife block. Holds a LOT of kitchen knives, esp if you have some that are faves from one set and some from another, which is great. Has a hole for the knife sharpener as well.But the BEST thing about this knife block is that it holds a nice solid wooden cutting board behind it. It is literally the perfect size for whipping out and quickly cutting some veggies, and it's SO CONVENIENT. Like I have a much larger and thicker cutting board and it's kind of annoying having to get it out when I need to use it, because it's just not convenient due to the size and because of the size, the storage options. SO THIS IS FRIGGIN AWESOME! I love it. And of course I already have the oil to keep it in good shape, like the other cutting board, I've had that thing for forever. See pic, it looks so nice but that cutting board really brings it up to like ten stars, not just five. It's just a really thoughtful addition. 10/5*
