We had a manual downrigger by Cannon already and decided to get a 2nd one for other side of the patio boat. This is a super little device, quick and easy to hook up and about 1/3 the size of our other one. I am a 64 yr old woman and the 4 lb ball (sold separately) is just the right size for me to manage. We troll at 30-60' with this thing and have caught many nice lake trout and large mouth bass. In order to attach it safely and quickly we secured two pieces of wood 6"x 6" with screws to the railing of boat. We used on the railing a couple of times and were worried it might slide off in the heat of the moment. You have to be a little careful putting it out and reeling it in, and double check the knobs so that the one that lets the line out doesn't get too loose (it will come off) and of course to keep it sturdily attached I just check the tightness a time or two while boating. Great little down rigger!

As advertised, this small downrigger is great for 20 to 100 feet of fishing depth off the side of a small John-boat. Don't expect a Cadillac product here - it is certainly entry level, but at less than half the price of others on the market, it is a good option for those that want to try downrig fishing without breaking the bank.I've heard of a lot of people breaking these units within days of receiving it. Personally, I think that would only happen if someone tightened the clamp or brake too tightly or used a weight heavier than 4 pounds. Yes, a heavier weight will reduce blowback and let you fish a littler easier when deeper than 40 feet, but remember that this is a small entry level downrigger. If you want to fish at precisely 87 feet directly below your boat while trolling 4 km per hour, this is not the product for you. If you want to catch fish at approximately 40 to 70 feet with a little more effort to see what downrigging is all about, this guy is for you.Pros:InexpensiveEasy mountingEasy to move from boat to boatCaught fish the first time I used it at 50'Cons:Can only accept a 4 pound weight or lighterWhen lowering the weight, the reel lock tends to lock itself sometimes, so you need to keep loosening itWhen raising the weight, the reel lock will loosen itself to the point of the nut falling off, so you need to keep tightening itThe line counter can become out of whack a bit, requiring you to spin the little wheel a few times with the line slack to reset it (no reset button)Like I said, the above "cons" are really just because it is an entry level unit. I would buy this again in a heartbeat, for its value. Also, please note as others have that you really need to buy the accessory kit too. Without it, you won't have the cannon ball, the rod holder or the line clip.Tight lines everyone!
