I swim open water and have gone, over the years from quitting at 55 deg. to 50, 45 and I'm now down to 40 deg. with having fine tuned my layering. I've developed a 'poor mans' dry glove using cotton chore gloves cut off at the wrist covered with extra large nitrile gloves and sucked down at the wrist with doubled up thick elastic bands and boy it keeps my hands dry with zero failure. Been using fingered 5 and 7 mil fingered gloves all this time and my fingers get numb at 1/2 mile- one mile being my normal routine in warmer water (not to mention it's a bitch kitty getting into them) but I can tough it out for another 1/4 and that's it they hurt.Well now, let me tell ya', these oven mitts are de bomb. I swam today using them for the first time and my thumb and forefingers felt barely chilled at one mile and I coulda kept going no problem. The other three were warm. I normally wear a large sans layering, have been buying XL-XXL in fingered gloves to allow for the extra 'stuffin' , so I winged it and bought XXL. Probably could have gone with XL as these are roomy and long. I think I'm gonna layer another cotton glove or find bulkier gloves-the room is there. Got a little water in the tips towards the end of my swim as I think...eh ,maybe...the gloves slipped a little bit-maybe-but no way it made any difference temp wise. The gauntlets allow for super easy entrance and the elastic strap was sufficient to keep water intrusion to a minimum although I'm going to sew another patch of velcro for a tighter fit or make a stand alone strap. Dexterity was surprisingly good as well. I was hoping for an improvement and honestly, as much as I cringed at spending $79 on freak'n gloves well, I guess I've wasted a lot more in fingered versions over the years to finally get to nirvana for my hands !! Damn, I may be break'n ice at this rate !

For the money, these will last for a few years W/ a coat of 5200 over wear spots now and then.be sure you add 5200 to expected wear areas before they are used; triples the life of these or any gloves

These did the trick! 5ml gloves just weren't cutting it and getting to thick to work easily with so I got these. I like the extra length to keep arms a little warmer as well. My hands were very comfortable diving in 51 deg water for about an hour and half - near the end I started getting chilly in a semi dry but never cold/numb as far as my hands went! It was weird wearing them at first, I wore them around the house and practiced using them for various tasks - I dive for fossils in low/no viz muddy rivers mostly so it is an adjustment b/c you can't "feel" what your hands are doing with these gloves being as thick as they are but then again neither can you when fingers are numb from being too cold, so just take some time and practice using them for your situation and you will be good to go! Also, these are much much much easier to get off and on compared to a 5ml 5 finger glove!! Don't forget to adjust your bands on your dive computer if you use stretchy bands!

These mitts are the good stuff. They keep my hands warm in cold water, which is their whole reason for being. If you get a pair of these mitts and you haven't used three-finger mitts/gloves you might want to practice stuff like knot-tying, working with any of your usual tools, or working your BC or drysuit inflator on land, or at least in controlled in-water conditions, before heading out "for real," because they definitely affect the sense of touch.

Mitts work great for me very warm Gold Dredging in Alaska 40 degree water. Only this I did was used 3M 5200 fast cure marine adhesive on the inside of the mitts, if you don't mitts wear out pretty quickly (but i knew this when I made the purchase).
