This cheese slicer feels sturdy in the hand, and is very well balanced. The handle is strong and durable, and the head is sharp and slices cheese at a very good thickness. You can also use this to slice other things, like vegetables, though the width of the blade lends itself more to cheeses, particularly medium soft cheeses.Norwegian cheeses particularly fit into this category (as it was made with them in mind), some of which you can get at supermarkets in the UK (e.g. Tine brown cheese, or Jarlsberg). You might find that most British hard cheeses (e.g. cheddar, red Leicester, etc.) will crumble when sliced with this.Overall a great tool, and good to have in the kitchen!

I read reviews on Amazon about people who were complaining that the wood wasn't what they'd expected. If you want hand crafted like finish on the wood it's easily done, first you wash the cheese slicer / knifes with warm water and dish soap if they're dry it could be that the wood grain feels a little bit rough, gently sand the wood with 400 grid sandingpaper, if there's a lose splinter or something that looks like a crack apply a dot of super glue and let it cure, next step is to polish the wood with grapeseed oil and your 400 or 600 grid sandingpaper, if the wood feels smooth enough to your liking wipe it off with a clean paper kitchen towel and reapply a thin coat of grapeseed oil for the next six days and you'll end up with a product that will last you a lifetime. You do need to oil it few times a year depending on how often you use it and if you let it sit in water or not to keep it in perfect condition. If you also want the cutting edge of the knife to be as smooth as the wood use a leather belt and an super fine polishing compound to get an old-fashioned sharpened and polished cutting edge.Do apple tape on the metal before sanding the wood to avoid scratches.
